How many calories in that popcorn? | Herbalife Healthy Eating Advice



Nutrition expert, Susan Bowerman breaks down three popcorn options with different calorie counts and provides tips on how to make a healthier choice.

Popcorn is a favorite snack amongst movie watchers. Most people are unaware of the large amounts of calories and fat found in some popcorn options. When it comes to popcorn not all the options are the same. That’s why it’s important to know how to make a healthier choice when snacking at the movies.

Susan headed to a local theater chain to pick up three popcorn options and here’s what she found: A small movie popcorn without butter has about 370 calories and 20 grams of fat. That’s about the same as eating a serving of French fries. To burn off the calories of a small movie popcorn with no butter you’d have to run non-stop for 45 minutes!

The same serving size of caramel popcorn has about 1,440 calories and 72 grams of fat! That’s 6 tablespoons of fat and 100 grams of sugar. The caramel popcorn has four times as much fat as in the movie popcorn and almost 400 of the calories are from sugar alone. In order to burn off the calories in a bowl of caramel popcorn you would have to run non-stop for three hours!

Plain air-popped popcorn with no salt or sugar added to it comes out to about 180 calories and it’s only 3 grams of fat. To burn off a bowl of air popped popcorn you’d have to run for about 22 minutes!
